Airway disease: It is a disease of the airways . It can result from smoking, dust exposure or asthma. A deficiency in a lung enzyme called Alpha one antitrypsin can result in COPD at younger age. If it is mild degree, cxr can be normal. The disease is strongly linked to smoking and it may progress to severe stage if you will continue to smoke despite treatment with inhalers. So the best treatment is stop smoking.

May not be needed: If you have been diagnosed with copd, routine use of medications may not be necessary depending on your stage. If you get short winded with little effort (walking short distances) you may benefit from a "rescue" inhaler but this is best determined by your physician.
