What is an occlusal adjustment?

Leveling the bite.: The dentist will have you bite on articulating (carbon) paper to determine where your teeth are hitting incorrectly. Then he will shave down high spots very lightly until all teeth are hitting evenly and in proper areas to achieve a comfortable and non-damaging bite.

Reshaping: Occlusal adjustment is when the chewing surfaces of teeth are reshaped by grinding specific trouble spots to allow your teeth to fit together better and more comfortably. It may involve just one single tooth, or many teeth. Ask your dentist to show you what her or she plans to do and why it is needed.

Bite adjustment: It is a very careful and stepwise reshaping of the contacting surfaces of your teeth. If there are uneven and interfering contact points / valleys of your teeth when closing , then these are ground down and reshaped to allow the teeth to contact smoothly and evenly. It can be complicated and must be meticulously performed so as not to over adjust . Good Luck.

See a prosthodontist: Occlusal adjustment is the intentional mechanical grinding of selected biting surfaces of teeth to improve the contact of or relationship between opposing tooth surfaces. See a prosthodontist for second opinion
