Not usually: Assuming your teeth and gums are relatively healthy, then a dental cleaning is not painful. If there are cavities and severe gum disease present, then this can be uncomfortable but the dentist can always give some local anesthesia to help. See a dentist and hygienist that you are comfortable with. Ask around, read reviews on google. Good luck.

Maybe: It depends upon the the condition of your mouth and the person cleaning your teeth. There are multiple ways to reduce or eliminate pain during a cleaning. If you experience pain during a cleaning let the person providing the service know and he or she should be able to help reduce or eliminate any pain.

Dental Cleanings: Dental cleaning is a very general term. If your gums are healthy, dental cleaning is simply removing any small amount of tarter that formed since your last cleaning. If you suffer from gum disease a more complicate cleaning called root planing is needed. It can be painful needing anesthesia to be able to clean tarter deep in the perio pockets of teeth. Don't be fearful. It is manageable.

No: Dental cleaning consists of removing stain and calculus or tartar above the gum line. It there is a need to do deeper cleaning due to localized or generalized loss of bone then a local or topical anesthetic can be used to alleviate any potential discomfort
