Does a bone density xray also show fractures ?

DEXA: I do not believe so. A conventional x-ray will show fractures. Dexa scan is meant only for osteoporosis screening and follow-up.

Not reliably: The images that are obtained on a scan done for bone mineral density are very low resolution compared to a conventional x-ray. Although it is possible to do a study known as a lateral vertebral assessment to look for spine compression fractures it is unlikely that a bone density test would pick up other types of fractures unless they involved major disruption of the bony anatomy. So, when fracture is suspected the best thing to do is usually a plain x-ray of the affected area.
