Occlusal splint: For an adult, i typically start with a hard occlusal splint that covers the front 6 teeth. If the patient is having no TMJ pain, I have them wear it at night only. If they are having pain, I have them wear it 24x7 for the first two weeks and then switch to night-time wear only. Additionally, i place the patient on an oral steroid for the first week.

Occlusal guard: An occlusal guard can be fabricated by your dentist to prevent clenching. Most clenching occurs while we sleep so the appliance would only need to be worn at bedtime.
