Falciparum malaria: Or malignant tertian malaria is the cause of cerebral malaria in untreated or poorly treated susceptible people. It clogs the brain's blood vessels causing brain swelling and seizures and is often fatal.

Cerebral Malaria: Cerebral malaria is a neurologic complication of Plasmodium falciparum infection. In children it can present w weakness & debilitating fatigue leading to seizures. It can cause swelling of brain, hemorrhages & sometimes body posturing, abnl eye movements & breathing patterns & changes of pupil size. Untreated Cerebral malaria is usually fatal in children. In adults sx's can include fever, headache

Infrequently: Most patients who recover from cerebral malaria can recover rapidly within 48 hour, s if given the correct treatments, without sequella. Unfortunately if treatment is delayed this disease can be fatal.
