Two ways: Usually ingrown toenails form from a malformation of the toenail. It ends up that email is too wide for the nailbed, or the sides of the nail naturally curve in. This causes pressure and the potential for an ingrown toenail to form. Ingrown toenails, can also caused by improper trimming of the nails. If you think you have an ingrown toenail, be sure to visit your podiatrist.

Trauma, cutting...: Some develop because of a fungus, some because of previous trauma to the nail. Other time it's due to the way you cut them, or if you dug too deep in the borders trying to treat it yourself. See a podiatrist for a definitive solution if you have one bothering you.

Previous answers and: Agree with previous answers and want to add that callus formation at the distal tip of toes can be an etiology. Our feet and toes sweat more than armpits and calluses can develop at the ends of the edges of toenails. To prevent ingrown nails, try getting rid of those distal calluses at the tips of toes and using deodorant spray to decrease sweat. Hope this helps.
