Why did he fall? : It depends on if he hurt anything else? Is he now bedbound? Breaking ribs in and of itself is not a predictor of mortality. If he gets a pneumonia because of the broken ribs, that would be more dangerous. Long term survival will depend on his overall health, chronic diseases, genetics and lifestyle not on his broken ribs.
