Ice, rinse, meds: For the first 24 hours (assuming no infection) apply ice to the outside of the face..15 min on..15 min off. Then 24 hours after the extraction start rinsing with warm salt water. Also take one of the nsaid's like advil (ibuprofen) or Motrin or whatever stronger pain med your dentist prescribed.

OTC Medications: Over-the -counter medications like advil or tylenol (acetaminophen) will often be enough to relieve the pain. If that is not strong enough, your dentist can prescribe you something stronger. Pain increasing after several days can indicate a complication like dry socket and must be treated by your dentist.
