Lump removal: A breast lump can be diagnosed by needle biopsy, typically. If the biopsy reveals cancer, then the lump needs to be removed. If the biopsy is inconclusive, the lump should also be removed, so a true diagnosis can be made.

It depends : The majority of breast lumps are benign or non-cancer. When you are young they are usually benign , however as you reach age 50 , there is a 50% chance that a lump is a cancer , and this % goes up as you get older. Therefore all breast lumps should be evaluated by a general surgeon and he will help determine the nature of the lump. If benign , it can be watched in some situations.
