No: Hpv is not as contagious as other sexually transmitted diseases (chlamydia, herpes, etc) it can still be transmitted from one partner to another, however. The best way to prevent transmission is using a condom.

Complex answer: You could be exposed but be immune (if you had the strain already). Your partner could not be actively shedding virus (not contagious). You could be exposed while your partner is contagious but may or may not get it during a specific exposure.
