When does a cavity become irreparable (via filling or root canal)?

Too much missing: A cavity becomes unrestorable if the dentist doesn't believe the tooth will last. Examples: not enough tooth structure remaining for a filling, a fractured tooth, or sever gum disease.

Decay: When the decay is too close to the nerve that the nerve can not repair or is exposed or if there is not enough tooth structure about the gum left to build it up.
