Several things: Many folks will do well, but surgery does not always get rid of all symptoms that motivate people to consider surgery. You may have persistent pain, continued or new weakness, numbness, tingling; difficulty emptying or controlling bladder or bowels, numbness in the private area, spinal fluid leakage, failure of fusion, problems relating to any implants used. Some of these may improve, but may not.

Generally there are risks with any surgery, which are possibilities, including infection, nerve damage, bleeding, need for blood transfusions, wound healing probs, ; those specific to the spine, make sure you discuss it with your surgeon.

The potential side effects is increased frequency of bowel movements and very occasionally a patient will develop bile diarrhea. A bile binder, like cholestyramine/questran, can be used to treat. Laprascopic gallbladder removal is a safe, effective procedure.

Agree with Dr. Berg. An interesting aspect can be seen in the female patient population. Not uncommon for female patients to report more regularity in bowel movements and decreased constipation after gallbladder removal.
