Improves drainage: A severely deviated septum can block the narrow outflow tracts of the sinuses into the nose. By straightening the septum this blockage can be alleviated. Often additional work is done to widen the drainage openings either with endoscopic instruments or using a balloon to dilate them. This is called fess for functional endoscopic sinus surgery. It's rare that a septoplasty alone will fix problem.
