Examination findings: You may need to be seen by a musculoskeletal specialist (orthopaedic surgeon). A collection of blood (hematoma) often seen on MRI or ultrasound leads to a diagnosis of a significant gastrocnemius tear, whereas a sprain would likely only be locally painful.

Calf: To know if you have a tear of your calf muscle or just have a bad muscle strain you should see if you can move your foot up-and-down. If you can't you may have a fair of your achilles tendon and/or calf muscle.
