Anxiety wakes you up: Anxiety is associated with limbic system and reticular formation (and other brain regions) arousal in the brain, which wakes a person up to deal with the threat (imagined). Obviously, if you were really in danger it would not be helpful to go to sleep. So, your brain wakes you up to fight or run for your life. Do all worrying, note taking, crying, phone calling, etc. Earlier in the day. Sleep.

Treat anxiety: Anxiety can cause insomnia, so treating the anxiety may help sleep, too. There are many possible causes of anxiety, from medical issues to stress to psychological conflicts. An evaluation by your doctor or a mental health professional is the best first step. Meanwhile, try light exercise or stretching, relaxation or breathing exercises, a warm soak — whatever helps relieve tension.
