Very few : As long as your blood pressure is adequate, there is little impact from the epidural. Most epidural drugs don't cross the placenta in a clinically significant manner, so their impact on the baby is minimal. We hydrate and support the blood pressure during epidurals to ensure that the blood pressure is adequate for uterine perfusion. Epidurals are safe pain management choice for mom and baby.

Sleepy, : Very few of the side effects of an epidural will cross over to your baby. He/she may be a little more sleepy at first, but should recover pretty quickly.

Safe: In situations when patient is poorly hydrated or epidural drugs cause severe hypotension fetal heart rate can react, which will be easily picked up by fetal heart rate monitor. Anesthesiologist will give IV medicine and patients blood pressure will be corrected. In majority of cases it is transient. Local anesthetic crossing placenta can cause ph abnormalities in the fetus, low probability.
