Rarely, it can cause persistent headache or low back pain. These side effects are so rare and its beneficial effect on maternal comfort during labor so significant that it still considered the best option for intrapartum analgesia.

Few: In general a properly placed epidural has few side effects. Most of the problems are minor and occur around the time of the epidural. It would be very rare to have any long term complications.
