Yes: Abdominal ultrasound is similar to vaginal ultrasound. Usually abdominal ultrasound requires a full bladder to see during early pregnancy though. Vaginal ultrasound can detect implantation approximately a week earlier.

Implantation, no ...: Implantation happens about a week after conception - the embryo is too small to be visible on an abdominal (or transvaginal) ultrasound scan. The first change on ultrasound in early pregnancy is a thickened lining of the uterus (endometrium), but this is not reliable, as there are other causes of a thick lining. The first real sign is a pregnancy sac at around five weeks from your last period.
