It depends: Total cholesterol doesn't tell me enough. If your LDL or HDL is very high, then alcohol has little impact (in reasonable amounts). If it is the triglycerides that are high, then all/any alcohol is likely a problem. However, you should really talk to a clinical lipidologist (special cholesterol dr.) for help, visit www.Lipid.Org and look for a board certified lipidologist near you.

Best would be none: There is some evidence that modest use of alcohol (2 drinks/day in men, 1/d in women) may lower the bad cholesterol, higher amounts actually increase hypertension and many other problems. Some think that red wine, containing resveratrol, may be heart-healthier, but the evidence is controversial. In addition, alcohol may raise triglycerides, which together with cholesterol, may increase heart risk.
