Pain treatment: Epidurals are often used to help relieve pain from an inflammed disc. Protruding discs are very common, yet in some circumstances these "protruding discs" can compress nerves and cause pain. Epidurals placed anti-inflammatory medication on top of the protruding disc which can help reduce pain and inflammation.

See below: The epidural space is filled with fat and lies above the sac that holds the spinal cord and the spinal nerves. Epidural steroid injections are used in cases where there is nerve root irritation which causes "sciatica" or pain running into the leg in the case of the lumbar spine. Epidural steroid injections have not proven to be helpful for lower back pain without sciatica symptoms.

Steroid: Epidural anti-inflammatory steroid injection helps reduce inflammation of nerve roots caused by a herniated disk. The injection is most helpful if it is used for pain that radiates down one or two limbs.
