No: Simple corneal abrasions do not need to be treated by patching the eye. According to a new review of studies, patching can initially slow healing and does not reduce pain.

Common: A common means of treatment is to patch the cornea for 24 hours. Most now however will put on the cornea a bandage lens which cuts the pain down and keeps the cornea open for the use of eyedrops.

Recommend lubricants: Like artificial tears and ointments for comfort and healing. No need to patch. Your eye doctor will sometimes place a bandage clear contact lens for comfort if it is a severe abrasion and there is concern about healing.
