How can i treat back pain?

Depends: There are many causes of back pain. The treatment will depend on your specific type. Please see your md for specifics to your case. In general, lower back pain is best treated with stretching, weight control/loss, core muscle/ligament strengthening through physical therapy, and even pain meds and injections.

Many ways: There are so many ways to treat back pain. In my opinion stretching can be the most helpful. Also it is important not to become too inactive as this will just weaken the back muscles and cause more problems. Physical therapy, sometimes medications, sometimes injections are also some of the treatments. Most back pain is rarely serious. For back pain that does not go away on its own, see your doctor.

Stretch: There are many causes of low back pain. Usually acute back or hip pain will improve over 1-2 weeks with anti-inflammatories, gentle streching, and use of heat/ice. If your pain does not improve or gets worse you should contact your physician.

Exercise: 95% of patients with back pain, not back and leg pain, experience relief with physical therapy. This can be water based initially, to add to compliance, then land based, finally something you do each day at hoem to maintain back health. Injections have a poor track record for lasting relief, and medicines can be useful to get things going but not long term.

Some questions: Bony, musculoskeletal, or originating in the abdomen/pelvis? Duration and intensity of symptoms? Severity of distress? What testing have you had and what have you tried? Known contraindications to medications, therapy, manipulation?
