REM Sleep: Most nightmares (at least the vivid ones you remember) occur in rem sleep. Awakening from rem sleep tends to be brief. Perhaps this is because during rem sleep there is "sleep paralysis" (you can't move your body) which might occur to prevent you from harming yourself by moving during a dream. In any event, most folks waken most easily from stage 1 or light sleep.
