Physical medicine: A mouth guard or a retainer or an oral orthotic acts as a physical medicine device by improving the mechanics of the jaw joint and the jaw muscles. Some times it can make symptoms worse too; the retainer would need an adjustment by the dentist. You should consult an orofacial pain dentist for a comprehensive eval and management plan.

Define retainer: When you say "retainer, " is it what you think is a type of mouthpiece made by an orthodontist? A retai8ner is made to keep the teeth from moving after getting the braces off, while an oral mouthpiece for tmj?Tmd is meant to either help with grinding or clenching, or reprogram (alter) the bite to conservatively help tmd. It will not move teeth, but it is not designed to retain the teeth.

Splint: The term is splint or mouth guard or night guard, orthotic. A retainer is used after orthdontia to maintain position of the teeth. A splint is used to decrease the pain and sometimes the clenching/grinding associated with some TMJ problems.
