Not much: Gold crowns have been around for hundreds of years. Gold is an element that the body or the mouth tolerates very well. Some people may have a metal allergy but it is not usually due to the gold but the other metals in the gold to give it strength. The negatives of gold is..They have no place in the front teeth for looks and the biggie now is...Gold is now veryexpensive.

Gold crowns: Positives: cannot break; can be used when there is very little interocclusal space (very 'tight bite' when there is not much room to prepare (drill) tooth. Negatives: unesthetic; can be more costly depending upon price of gold at the time and size of crown.
