May or may not be: Coughing itself can bring up a streak of blood at times. But if it persists it needs to be evaluated.

NO!: Coughing up blood is not normal. If you are coughing blood, you need to see your primary doctor or a pulmonologist. The question for me is why do you have copd? Having this diagnosis at 35 y/o is not common and i would definitely see a pulmonologist if you havent already.

No!: Coughing up blood, called hemoptysis, is a symptom that always requires an evaluation. The most common etiology is bronchitis but malignancy must always be ruled out since malignancy can cause hemoptysis. This patient should also be tested for alpha-1-antitrypsin deficiency, a genetic cause of COPD occurring at a younger age. Smoking cessation is necessary if the patient is smoking!

Hemoptysis: It is not normal for anyone to cough up blood could be caused by many things yet DX of COPD requires smoking history which increases risk for malignancy.
