Depends: It depends on the individual but nodules < 1.0 cm are usually asymptomatic. Nodules > 2 cm could cause problem. You should see your physician for an examination to confirm what you are feeling. Nodules > 1 cm might need evaluation and possibly biopsy depending on what it looks like on the ultrasound. Greater than 1 cm: Thyroid nodules greater than 1 cm in size can be benign or malignant. Large nodules, even if benign could compress the trachea and cause breathing problems. An ENT specialist or endocrinologist may perform a fine needle biopsy to see if there are signs of follicular thyroid cancer or follicular cells . Further recommendations depend upon the results of such a biopsy.
