A member asked:

What should be immediately done when saliva enters the wind pipe and a person is experiencing choking?

Observation: If it is just saliva, the best solution is letting the affected person cough it out. As long as they can talk or breathe, just keep an eye on them. If they show the universal sign of choking (hands to their throat), can't breathe or if they can just make a slight wheezing sound, the heimlich maneuver is appropriate. If they become unconscious, it's time to begin cpr.

Nothing: If the person is coughing, just let the person cough. He/she will be able to clear the saliva from the windpipe. If it is only saliva, the person will eventually clear the windpipe. If the person is really choking, saliva will not be the culprit. There may be something lodged in the windpipe. In such a circumstance, the heimlich maneuver should be done.
