Aesthetic surgeons: The three specialties that perform blepharoplasty are ophthalmology, facial plastic surgery and plastic surgery. All have extensive training in understanding how to perform the procedure, appreciate the aesthetics related to the procedure and manage the complications. You really should never have this surgery performed by anyone other than one of these board certified specialists.

Experience counts: I agree with dr. Campanelli. Ophthalmologists, facial plastic surgeons and plastic surgeons all have alot of experience with eyelid surgery. We all tend to argue about why our own specialty is better positioned to provide great outcomes. However, the fact is that any of these three specialties, if the surgeon has alot of experience, will likely provide a very good blepharoplasty result.

Check credentials: Physicians who are board certified in facial plastic surgery, plastic surgery, and oculoplastic surgery have been appropriately trained and vetted for this procedure. More importantly, find a surgeon who regularly performs blepharoplasty and has a good local reputation.
