No: CP is a condition where permanent damage to nerves inside the brain has resulted in a disorder of movement & posture. Many times the stiffness can be helped with medication and mobility can sometimes be improved to a point with physical therapy.

Unfortunately, it could cause some injury. Best to go to registered physical & occupational therapists.

Can Help: Chiropractic may help improve quality of life, function, and reduce symptoms. It might be wise to look to a Chiropractic Neurologist or Functional Neurologist, as well as into low force techniques such as instrument based adjusting.

Can people of any age get cerebral palsy?

CP acquired< 3yo: By definition cerebral palsy is related to injury to the developing nervous system befort the 3rd birthday. (pregnancy, labor, delivery or the infancy years). Brain injury after that point is looked on as a different process similar to adult strokes or brain injury defects. The separation is more than random. Infants with CP have a greater recovery potential than adults with similar injuries.

Does cerebral palsy get worse over time?

Pediatrics 46 years experience
Generally not: By definition the injury causing CP creates a stable effect; that is you do not see deterioration of skills after they are acquired. Some nervous system disorders get worse with age as the injury is continuing, not cp. Some CP patients may choose a wheel chair later in life although they can still walk some for the convenience & speed. Most CP kids actually will get better over time with therapy.

How is cerebral palsy diagnosed?

Physical exam: Since infants do little more than feed & cuddle we must wait until they are a little older to begin showing abnormalities of muscle tone & difficulty acheiving motor skills before CP is suspected. I have suspected this as early as 6 months but it is often around a year before the features are evident enough to make the dx.Workup may look into look alike issues.

Injury to nerves: CP results from an stable (non-progessive) injury to brain cells that are devoted to movement, muscle control & posture. The injury can be lack of nutrients (oxygen, glucose) due to blood flow problems or hemorrhage or infection (virus, parasite, bacteria). The injury can occur during pregnancy, labor, delivery or the first 3 yrs.
A 21-year-old member asked:

What is patterning, and how does it relate to cerebral palsy?

2 doctor answers2 doctors weighed in
Dr. James Ferguson
Pediatrics 46 years experience
An archaic Rx: In the 70's & 80"s a pt & ot in philli promoted a patterning method for cp. The method involved rebreathing co2 & moving body thru motions of fish/salimander/man to awaken the nerves. Psychological researchers showed the method was no better that simple visitation & encouragemt. For the pt&ot they were getting $30k in initial fees + followup.Well meaning but worthless rx follow many chronic pbs.
