A member asked:

Can trigger finger in the thumb be caused by a complication of carpal tunnel release?

Side effect: Carpal tunnel release can cause swelling in your hand afterwards. Sometimes this may lead to trigger finger, which is due to swelling in your tendon. In addition, after surgery, you may be using your hand more since your fingers are no longer tingling. This can also lead to some swelling in the tendons. Developing trigger finger after surgery is not due to something wrong with the surgery.

Not likely: Trigger fingers seem to run with carpal tunnel syndrome. Swelling from surgery could create a trigger finger, but swelling from carpal tunnel surgery is typically very minor. Trigger finger is very very common and people with carpal tunnel have more trigger fingers.

No: Both conditions occur in patients that have swelling in the hand. They are only related in that they are caused by swelling.

No: I would not consider post-operative trigger finger or trigger thumb a complication of carpal tunnel surgery. The two conditions are often seen simultaneously. The timing may appear suspect, but one did not lead to the other.
