Tracking problem: The kneecap is designed to glide in a groove in the thigh bone (femur). The movement is controlled by the thigh and hip muscles. Weakness in these muscles can result in the kneecap bouncing around in the groove. This can ultimately lead to pain. Other possible contributing factors to a sensation of the kneecap "bouncing" around are bowlegs, knock-knees, foot pronation, and other malalignments.
