PTF: Or patella-femoral syndrome is what it sounds like. Hard to say for sure without a phys exam, but could be. It has to do with tracking of the knee cap through the femoral grooves (at the top of the knee). This can be fixed with a brace, but more importantly quad strengthening to correct the "over-pull" of one quad side verse the other. Try the exercises attached while waiting to get pt prescriptio.

Cartilage softening: The cartilage under your kneecap may be softening from age, wear or other reasons. This is usually treated with physical therapy to strengthen the quadriceps and stretch the hamstrings. Taping sometimes helps in the short term as can patella cutout splints. Otc meds like Motrin also help but don't cure it. See an orthopedist for more in depth eval if symptoms persist as there may be a tear.

Kneecap tracking: It may be a problem of the way the kneecap tracks. Or you may have damage on the back side of the knee cap,. See an orthopedic sports medicine knee specialist for proper evaluation.
