Not so serious: Inflamed optic nerve (optic neuritis) in children is usually due to the body's response from viral or other infections. Unlike adults multiple sclerosis is a less likely possibility.

Optic neuritis: Could be a sign of optic neuritis or papilledema which are both serious conditions that require further testing such as imaging studies of the brain like an MRI scan to figure out why it is occurring. See an ophthalmologist or neurologist.
