Viral illness: Fifth disease is a viral illness that causes fever, upper respiratory symptoms, and a characteristic lacy red rash, bright red cheeks and a bright red butt (slapped cheek syndrome). For the child it's a mild, limited rash. The issue is that it can damage fetuses, so pregnant women have to be very careful. Schools are vigilant as children can bring this illness home to pregnant family.
