Good question: Generally in the United States these are "repaired" when > 4.5 - 5.0 CM in diameter. Prior to surgery, a thorough evaluation of heart, lung & kidney function is completed. The carotid arteris are evaluated if a bruit ( noise ) is present in the neck arteries & the leg arteries are evaluated. Smoking should be stopped, blood pressure controlled, blood sugars controlled.

Not sure: AAA above 5 cm are treatable. Ask your doctor why. Does the patient have a bad heart or an underlying infection?
