It varies by person: Most of us just feel something close to menstrual cramps but some feel more. Try to stay active. And, like everything else, you'll be more tolerant of pain if you have slept the night before.

Probably: The first stage of labor is the time when the cervix is dilating up to 10cm. The second stage starts when the cervix is dilated to 10 cm and the patient starts pushing. Labor can be mildly painful or excruciatingly painful. For most women labor is quite painful.
