It depends: The size and characteristics are important indicators of whether a nodule is cancerous. Previous chest x-rays or scans would also be helpful. If the nodule is a new nodule (not seen on previous films) and the person is a smoker, it is more likely to be cancer than if the nodule has been seen and has remained stable over time.

The odds that a nodule is cancer depends in the appearance and size of the nodule, the medical history of the patient, the smoking history of the patient, and how the nodule changes over time. Radiologists, pulmonary physicians and thoracic surgeons are best qualified to determine the risk that a particular nodule is cancer.
