What is transition in labor?

When labor speeds up: Transitioning is when your labor "kicks into high gear." you move rapidly to being completely dilated and ready to push the baby out. It is called transitioning because you are moving from the first stage of labor to the second. The first stage is when you are contracting and your cervix is dilating from 1 to 10. The second stage of labor is when you are completely dilated and start pushing.

Transition: The last part of active labor – when your cervix dilates from 8 to a full 10 centimeters – is called the transition period because it marks the shift to the second stage of labor.
