Stop hydrocodone: Stop hydrocodone cough syrup or use it only at night time and switch Mucinex (guaifenesin) to plain Robitussin 2 tsp every 4 hrs till cough is gone, sometimes it works better, if still can't produce any phlegm go back to your doctor.

Prolonged cough: If you've had the cough for long prior to seeing your doctor, i suspect that you may have pertussis or whooping cough. It's too late to do the pcr test taken from a nasal swab but your doctor can send you for a blood test to rule it out. You also need a chest x-ray. Pertussis runs its course despite taking antibiotics and your cough could continue for months before it stops.
