Stress fracture: There are lots of reasons for insidious foot pain (pain for no apparent reason). Most common is a stress fracture. Most people do not remember any injury. Other reasons can be tendinitis, gout, neuritis or an infection. I would rest, ice and see my favorite podiatrist for an x-ray.

There are different: Reasons. One would be a stress fracture. A stress fracture does not have to occur secondary to a traumatic event. Simple walking can cause one to occur. This would cause both swelling and pain. I would follow up with a podiatrist or orthopod so that you can have x-rays and they can find a definitive diagnosis for you.

Nerve compression: There are nerves on the top of the foot that can become compressed due to swelling. I would see a podiatrist for exam and treatment.

See Podiatrist: Could be a stress fracture which is caused by low grade trauma and excessive pressure on area over a period of time as opposed to a sudden injury. A history, physical exam and x-rays would be a good start.
