Affective disorder: A type of affective disorder characterized by periods of mania in addition to depression. Some pts have mild sx while others have more severe mood swings. Treatment involves mood stabilizers and sometimes other drugs as well. Biggest problem is compliance because when pts are manic they frequently do not recognize a need for meds-- important to include family in treatment.

Complicated: BP symptoms include racing thoughts, grandiosity, mood swings, agitation & sleep probs. Good meds (e.g., symbyax, (fluoxetine and olanzapine) lithium & depakote) are available to treat bp. Careful diagnosis is essential since BP and adhd share symptoms such as inattention, distractibility, sleep probs, impulsivity & risk taking and b/c BP can be misdiagnosed as unipolar depression. Persons w/ BP i can be very impaired.
