To form bone: Spinal fusion is to create an environment to promote bone formation between 2 segments on the lumbar spine. Ex. L4-5 fusion means that the goal of the surgery is to form bone between L4 and l5. It is most commonly indicated as adjunct in neuro decompressive surgery when there is instability . It can be also indicated to treat back pain. In modern days screws are used to stabilize a fusion.
