A member asked:

Can you tell me if the damage to the optical nerve happens as a result of psychiatric problems like schizophrenia or is it part of the symptom?

Optic nerve damage: Psychiatric illness alone does not cause damage to the optic nerve. Sometimes a person with illnesses like ms can have psychotic symptoms -- and ms can cause optic nerve damage.

None of those: I am not sure what you mean by damage to the optic nerve. If a doctor has found this damage then it has nothing to do with the diagnosis of schizophrenia and you need to be followed by a neurologist. However, if you believe your optic nerve is damaged but it has not been confirmed by a doctor or if a doctor has evaluated you and cannot find damage then it may be symptoms of schizoprenia.

Symptom?: Not sure what the symptom is, but no direct correlation between the illness and the damage, unless medications are causative in long run.

Optic nerve damage: Optic nerve damage is not due to psychiatric disease. You should see an eye doctor to be evaluated for an alternate cause.
