Not important: Gold is a wonderful restorative material for teeth. However, many patients shy away from it due to cost and "looks". Acceptable alternatives include dental amalgam, composite resin (both directly placed and indirectly made) and high strength porcelains. Don't be afraid to ask about alternatives and get the full story on them before you make the decision as to what is best for your situation.

Filling: There are different types of filling materials that are available to the patients such as silver, tooth colored fillings(composite or porcelain) or gold. You should discuss your options with your dentist and ask him/her the advantages and disadvantages of each kind and make an informed decision afterwards.

Not common anymore: With the strength, durability and bonding of the new dental materials for fillings, gold may not even be considered. If you tend to break teeth or fillings easily or grind or clench, though, then metal fillings could be the way to go. Talk it over and listen to options from your dentist.

Gold standard: Every dental material used to rebuild teeth has advantages and disadvantages. However, a well-done gold filling can last 2-4 times longer than any other dental material, and always is considered the "gold standard" for dental fillings. Not many dentist do them anymore, but they are usually required for graduation from dental school in USA. Good luck.
