Yes: If all you have is plaque, then a dental cleaning with scaling is appropriate. However, if you have a lot of calcified deposits in deeper areas and on the root surfaces, then deep scaling and root planing may be needed. However, even in this case, all of the calcified deposits may not be removed necessitating a surgical approach be a periodontist/general dentist.
