Whoever did surgery: It sounds like that when the surgery was done, that probably you noticed a sharp pain when they numbed you up. This is an unusual but unforseeable situation and can cause numbnes that can last a few months or rarely permanent. No neglegence was involved, but go back to the doctor and ask him to check you out.

Specialist: I would recommend either a oral surgeon or a periodontist.

Original surgeon: Probably should return to the dentist who did the surgery. If it was on the lower area, you may have had some nerve injury depending on where the surgerized area was located. If not, i'd start with your general dentist to see if there are other oral conditions that may be affecting the sensations you are having. He can refer you to an oral surgeon to explore options for correcting any nerve injury.
