The torque motion: The twisting motion or torque puts an excessive load on the ligaments and soft tissue structures thus causing a tear or pulling of the structures and subsequent soft tissue injury.

Many ways: You could have twisted it or stepped in a hole. Excessive stretching of the ligament could create a tear.
