A Bit Young Now: Secundum asds do not cause long-term problems for years and years. I am an interventional pediatric cardiologist and typically do not close asds in the cath lab until the children are at least 4 or 5. The surgeons do the same. Children with asds do live well into adulthood without problems (i.e. Grandparent age) though their life-expectancy is likely just a few years shorter than normal.
